December 2012

Hi Everyone,

Club Championships – Sunday 17 March
These were held in the Medbury School auditorium with about 30 members taking part. It was great to see a dozen karate-ka aged 6-10 years giving kumite competition a go for the first time. They have taken the first step up the ladder and will have the benefit of experience when they compete in official tournaments over the coming months. They also had the benefit of seeing 3 club members who are members of the New Zealand Karate team in action (Adriana Nicolaie and Reid & Nadia Edmond). They have seen first-hand the standard required to reach national level, hopefully they were inspired!

Shihan Duane (National Coach and Selector) Training

Saturday 13th April10am to 4.30pmRoydvale School

For green belt and up.
Cost - $20.00 for one session, $30.00 for full day.

Grading – This Weekend (6-7 April)
Training for all those grading will be held at the Honbu 464 Tuam st on Saturday with grading on Sunday. See the information available here.

New Zealand Open – 27/28 April + Training Camp 29/30 April – Pioneer Stadium, Christchurch
We are fortunate each year to have the NZ Open (one of the two national events) in our home town. The competition is open to all students, regardless of age, belt or experience. All students from Jitsuei Kai are encouraged to take part – they will be well supported by our coaches and senior members. Our club always does well at this event, from under 8 all the way up to open grade. It will be great to see as many of you there as possible. The champs are followed by a two day training camp which again is open to all students. Entry forms for both are available here and here.

National Championships – Funding
The nationals are a still while away( Porirua – 20/23 July) but the JKF Goju Kai NZ Association has already applied for funding for airfares and accommodation. Please DO NOT book flights or accommodation if you wish to take advantage of any funding we receive as the funding organisations will not reimburse us for items that have already been paid. We achieved 100% funding last year and are confident of achieving it this year. I will inform everyone by newsletter as soon as funding is confirmed.

World Cadet and Junior Champs – Guadalajara, Spain – 7-10 November
For those interested in competing at this level, please see the information here.

December 2012

Hi Everyone,

This is the last newsletter for 2012. It’s been a very successful year for the club, both competition wise (with a swag of medals from tournaments) and participation wise (full classes in all the dojos and fantastic turnouts at the gradings). On behalf of the Association I’d like to thank Pat, Dean, George and Heather Sensei for their commitment and skill in training our young karate ka and all the parents who have chosen to support their children in doing karate at the club. In 2013 we will go from strength to strength!

Gee, 2013 is rocketing along already and the first event for the year is almost here:

Club BBQ
When: 12 noon this Sunday (24 Feb)
Where: Spencer Park, Lower Styx Rd. Look for the balloons.
Who: All students and their families from Tuam St, Lyttelton, Redcliffs, Medbury and Cathedral Grammer Dojos are welcome! A special welcome to those new to the club.
Bring: There is a gas BBQ, bring food, drink, chairs, rugs. Also togs, towel, water gun/ pistols and dry clothes for the kids.
Why: It’s a fun afternoon and a chance to get to know other members of the club, we look forward to seeing you there!

Calendar
The calendar for the rest of the year is on the club’s can be found here

Funding for Nationals, Porirua, 20/21 July
The nationals are some time away but the Association will be making grant applications for airfares and accommodation well in advance. It’s important that students wishing to attend do not make their own reservations if they wish to be covered by the grants because the funding bodies will not cover expenses that have been incurred prior to the grant being awarded. As in previous years we will try to get everyone booked into the same motel so we can keep the team and their families together. If you are interested in attending, please contact Monique Edmond moniqueedmond@yahoo.com by 28 February. Expressing your interest does not commit you to attending but will help us determine numbers for the grant applications.

Shoes
PLEASE ensure students wear footwear to and from the dojo. This helps keep the mats clean and in good condition.

Hamilton Open
If anyone is interested the information and entry form for the Hamilton Open 24th March are here for download.

Association Subs – Now due!
The JKF Goju Kai NZ Association is run by a small group of dedicated parents and senseis who support the Jitsuei Kai Karate Club with fundraising and grant applications. It is a separate legal entity to Shi Sei Kan, the business of Sensei Pat. The Association has been successful in raising a significant amount of money for the club over the last 3 years for equipment, training camps, travel and accommodation at the national championships and the lease at 464 Tuam St. All students must be a paid up member of the Association to train under Pat, George or Dean Sensei or be able to participate in gradings. If you have not already paid your subs ($20 under 16 years old, $25 for 16 years and over), please follow the payment instructions on the membership form here.

Karate 2020 needs our support. Back the Olympic Bid giving them a like on Facebook!!

Beach Training - Corsair Bay

Well, it was more like park training as a heat wave meant there were too many people on the beach. Great to see plenty of youngsters attending this and thanks to some of the older karate ka for helping out. We all enjoyed a dip in the sea and a bbq (including Liviu’s famous Romanian sausages) afterwards.

Grading Weekend

Congratulations to all those who graded this term and especially to Attica Kenton–Dau who attained his shodan (that’s Attica in the foreground).

Junior classes will recommence the week school restarts.
The calendar for next year can be downloaded here. If you misplace this you can always check out the club’s calendar of events on the club’s found here.

Holiday Program
This is the second last week of the holidays and is a great way to get the kids out of your hair for 4 days :). They are for all grades – some excellent concerted training for the younger karate ka (you will notice a big difference in their confidence and coordination) and for the more advanced karate ka as well (only 5 weeks from then until the Australian JKF Goju Kai Championships – see below.)

Australian JKF Goju Kai Championships – Brisbane 1-3 March
Pat Sensei is very excited to be taking a strong team to these championships in order to show them how it’s done! This is a fantastic event to introduce players to the international arena of competition in a friendly environment and there are already 11 karate ka who have expressed interest. Forms are here:

Jürgen Thiele (Noah’s dad) is kindly co-ordinating accommodation at the Cleveland Motor Inn www.clevelandmotorinn.com.au The costs are AU$40-70 per person per night depending on the configuration of the rooms. Please let Jürgen know by 31 December if you would like to take advantage of this.

We will all look to travel on the same flights. Please book these directly:
CHC-BNE, 28FEB13, NZ7927 (Virgin AU), 16.00h / 16.50h (no, sorry, not a 50 minutes flight).
BNE-CHC, 04MAR13, NZ7928 (Virgin again), 08.30h / 14.55h (so no school that day).

A final word from Pat Sensei
It has been a very successful year for the club. There has been fantastic participation by a growing pool of young players attending the annual camp and the regional, national and international events. Another area of participation which is growing is the parent support. The amazing successes of our athletes is outstanding, considering what has happened to many over the last two and half years This all makes me a very proud and happy :).

Any questions please contact Pat Sensei, 3288 333 (hm) or 027 241 8011 gojupaddy@xtra.co.nz

Hi Everyone,

Maekawa Sensei Visit
This was a huge success. All Maekawa Sensei’s seminars were well attended and he was very impressed with the attitude and commitment of our karate-ka. A number of students told me they learned heaps, including muscles they never knew they had! Thanks to Lindsey Thomas, Dean Wiseman, George Glausiuss, Heather Cooper and Joe McGregor Sensei for assisting with the training.

Shodan Grading
While he was here Maekawa Sensei assessed 3 karate-ka for their black belts. Congratulations to Jade Taylor and Chantelle Chiles on obtaining shodan (first dan) and to Adriana Nicolaie for gaining Nidan (2nd dan).

Sunday 2nd December - Beach Training

There will be no training over the holidays at the Lyttelton, Cathedral Grammer or Medbury dojos but you are most welcome to come train at Tuam St. For the timetable click here.

Oceania Championships, Sydney
Wow! What fantastic results from our karate ka who represented New Zealand at the Oceania Karate Championships in Sydney two weekends ago:

Adriana Nicolaie - Gold kumite girls 12-13yrs 50+kg, Silver kumite team 10-13yrs mixed, bronze kata girls 12-13yrs

Nadia Edmond - Bronze kumite girls 12-13 under 50kg
Connor Aldridge - Bronze kumite Male under 75kg

Their results were achieved through hard training and smart fighting. Congratulations to them and Caitlin Aldridge the other team member on these magnificent achievements. You can read more about them in the Youth Sport section of today’s Press.

George Sensei also advanced to the next Oceania coaching level. The NZ team was on fire, winning 35 golds to Australia’s 31, with only half the number of competitors.

21 October – Otago Championships
We have 11 competitors so far going down for this competition over Labour Weekend. Competitors and families are organising their own accommodation and transport however we will all be getting together on Sunday evening for drinks and dinner. The competition entry form is available here. Entries need to be in by 17 October.

28 October – Club Champs
Entry forms will be emailed and handed out the first week of term The emphasis is on giving younger, less experienced karate-ka an opportunity to get some experience at competition in a supportive, friendly environment. There are trophies at stake but fun, involvement and learning are the main focus. For example some of our senior students will be refereeing. The champs are open to all Jitsuei Kai karate-ka i.e. Lyttelton, Medbury, Cathedral Grammar and Tuam St dojos.

August 2012

Hi Everyone,

This email is to advise of upcoming events:

8/9 September - Grading.
This is earlier than previously advertised as Pat Sensei has a hip operation on 12 September and will be out of action for a few weeks. A bulletin confirming revised classes will be sent nearer the time.

15/16 September - Oceania Championships, Sydney
All the best to Adriana, Sophie, Caitlin, Connor, Reid and Nadia who are representing NZ at these championships. They have all been training hard (including mornings before school/ varsity) so will be in the best possible shape. George Sensei is attending as an official referee and Dean Sensei as an assistant team coach.

21 October – Otago Championships
These are getting bigger every year and we will be sending a team down again. It's a great starter competition for new karate-ka so if your child wants to give competition a go this is a fun one to start with. The champs coincide with Wanaka Fest on the Saturday which looks like heaps of fun http://www.lakewanaka.co.nz/new-zealand/Event-Details/?fuseAction=detail&eventID=308 Please let Dave Neill nik.dave@xtra.co.nz know if you are interested in going by Friday 24 August. If there is enough interest the Association will pay for a van. It might still be possible to arrange group accommodation as well.

27 October – Fundraising BBQ at Bunnings, Tower Junction
All those who went to the nationals will be expected to help out for a couple of hours and will be contacted shortly about this.

28 October – Club Champs
Again, these are a different date than that previously advertised. The emphasis is on giving younger, less experienced karate-ka an opportunity to get some experience at competition in a supportive, friendly environment. There are trophies at stake but fun, involvement and learning are the main focus. For example some of our senior students will be refereeing! The champs are open to all Jitsuei Kai karate-ka i.e. Lyttelton, Medbury, Cathedral Grammar and Tuam St dojos. Keep an eye out for the entry forms which will be emailed and handed out.

19 – 23 November
Visit from Mikawa Sensei from Goju Kai Singapore, one of Pat Sensei's former teachers. Mikawa Sensei is a hugely accomplished and experienced karate-ka and Pat Sensei will be putting together a series of workshops so we learn as much as possible from him. The classes are likely to replace existing classes and a few more may be added. Watch this space!

8/9 December – Grading and club prize giving
As scheduled.

Information Booklet
You know how when you first arrived at the dojo and didn't have a clue about dojo etiquette or grading or competitions or even how to tie the belt? Well, we've all been there and a lot of us are still there so the Association has put together an information booklet for parents and students to refer to. It gives a concise run down on (pretty much) all you need to know. It will be handed out free of charge at trainings in the next week or so.

Any questions please contact Pat Sensei, 3288 333 (hm) or 027 241 8011 gojupaddy@xtra.co.nz

Hi Everyone,

Grading
The grading over the weekend was well attended with 67 students grading successfully. It was particularly pleasing to see so many younger karate-ka stepping up and showing what they can do. Special congratulations go to Nadia Edmond who was awarded Shodan (black belt). Nadia has been practising karate since she was 5 and at 11 years, 9 months is the youngest female Shodan in the club's history.

School Holiday Program
Download the revised program (the dates are 2-5 July) here. The program is a great learning opportunity for kids of all ages and experience (and a great holiday activity!). Here is some feedback from previous programs:

"I like how this holiday program has pushed me further in my focus and self-esteem. It also helped me gain confidence and passion and to understand everything. I woke up and dam! Karate, got to get up! But when I got there and started it was really fun."

"I learnt that if someone is older and taller than me I believe that I can still be better in my heart. I always felt stronger after karate. I didn't enjoy getting up at 7.30 (but) I really enjoyed making friends and making me stronger."

"The best part was the games."

"I was surprised how many chin ups I was able to do. Sensei's tricks were great, but hard to figure out how to do them. I mostly enjoyed Randori kumite!

"I have really enjoyed the karate intensive training. I have enjoyed learning new kata and exercises. I feel like I have gone up a level. I have really enjoyed the lunch break and playing different games and becoming better friends."

AGM
This was held after the grading, thank you to those who attended. The Chairman's report can be downloaded here.

June 2012

Hi Everyone,

Canterbury Westland Championships - Reminder
9.00am Saturday 16th June 2012. Mairehau High School, 440 Hills Road, Mairehau, Christchurch.

Entries close 5pm Friday 8th June (tomorrow). Late entries or entries without payment will not be accepted.
Details and Entry downloadable here.

Along with the club champs later in the year, this competition is the best one for budding competitors to start with. We always have a big team there (which usually bags a swag of medals) so there is plenty of support and guidance for the younger competitors. It would be great to see some of our younger karate-ka (students) giving it a go.

Grading - 23,24 June
This is only a bit over two weeks away! See the grading information here.

AGM – JKF Goju Kai NZ Association
Sunday 24 June, 4.00pm.
Straight after grading at 464 Tuam St

The JKF Goju Kai NZ Association's committee is a small group of dedicated parents and senseis who support the Jitsuei Kai Karate Club with fundraising and grant applications. The committee has been successful in raising nearly $78,000 for the club over the last 2 years. This money goes towards equipment, training camps, travel and accommodation at the national championships, and the lease at 464 Tuam St. You are invited to show your support for them by attending the AGM which will be held after the grading at 464 Tuam St, 4pm on Sunday 24 June. It will be an opportunity to hear what they have achieved and what they have planned for the coming year. You won't be given a job however if you'd like to help from time to time, please let myself or one of the committee members know.

Oceania Championships, September, Sydney

Hi Everyone,

Glentui
Our training camp at Glentui Meadows over the weekend was a great success. 39 students participated, about 1/3 of them under the age of ten.
As well as the karate training it is a great opportunity for the kids to gain some self-confidence through self-responsibility as we encourage them to do things for themselves while they are there. There will have been plenty of tired puppies on Monday morning!

Hi Everyone,

Glentui
The club's annual training camp is at Glentui Meadows Conference and Leisure Centre (near Oxford) on 25-27 May. It's open to all members no matter what their experience and is always a highlight in our annual calendar. Last year we had 35 students attend and we are expecting more this year. Parents are invited to attend as well but are not essential as there will be plenty of senseis and committee members to oversee the children. Details and registration. Please complete the registration and hand with payment to Pat Sensei by 18 May for catering purposes.

Dojo Exterior
Many of you will have noticed the new signage and paint job outside the dojo in Tuam St. This was organised by Dean Sensei and generously paid for by Senseis Dean, George and Gary. A big thank you to them on behalf of the association and all the students for such generous support of our club.

Central North Island Open

National Championships, Porirua, 7,8 July + National Training Camp 9,10 July
Good news! We have been fortunate to have received 100% funding for accommodation and a rental van for both the nationals and the subsequent training camp. We are also confident of receiving at least 50% (if not 100%) funding for the airfares. If you are interested in attending, please check with Pat Sensei then contact the team manager Monique Edmond moniqueedmond@yahoo.com by Sunday 29 April with the dates and times you would like to travel so she can make reservations. We are expecting the majority of the team will travel to Wellington around 6pm on Friday 6th, pick up the rental van and drive out to Porirua, returning to Christchurch either 6pm on Tuesday10th or mid-morning Wednesday 11th. If you wish to travel outside these times you will have to make your own way to/ from the airport.

Shoes
Please note it is imperative that students wear shoes to and from the main dojo at 464 Tuam St. Some drug needles have been found in the area in front of the dojo and we don't want any students inadvertently standing on one. The front of the dojo has been cleaned up and painted and an outside light installed to try and deter users.

Hi Everyone,

Club Picnic
The picnic last Sunday at Spencer Park was very enjoyable – a great chance for the adults to catch up and the children to horse around. Somehow Sensei Dean managed to avoid getting soaked in the water fight, I doubt he will be let off so lightly at the Glentui training camp..

Sausage Sizzle
This is at Bunnings, Marshland's road this Saturday 3 March. We need more volunteers, if you can help out for a couple of hours, please contact Jan Paterson janpaterson@xtra.co.nz 332 88893 (H) 021 554 001 (M)

NZ Open 14-15 April, Pioneer Sports Stadium, Christchurch
See the entry form attached. This is the first competition of the year and is open to everyone from 6 year olds to the old pros. The club has a proud tradition in this event and we currently have ½ doz title holders in numerous age groups so it will be great to have a big team there. If you are not sure if you are up to the required standard, please contact Sensei Pat.

National Championships, Porirua, 7,8 July
If you are interested in attending, please contact Monique Edmond moniqueedmond@yahoo.com straight away. Expressing your interest does not commit you to attending but will help us determine numbers for the grant applications. This is important! Club Tracksuit Jackets

The Association has purchased some more black and white tracksuit jackets for students and parents. Kids sizes are 10yrs, 12 yrs, 14 yrs ($75 ea), Adult sizes are S, M ($85). Children who are tall for their age might want to go a size up otherwise the age size is a good indication. A medium adult jacket fits a 180m tall man. These will be available next Thursday from Michelle Taylor gramich@xtra.co.nz , 383 2114 (hm), 0275 779 794

Kung Fu Panda II

Any one who saw Kung Fu Panda 1 will know this will be a fun movie. The association has booked a cinema at Northlands at 4pm on Sunday 7 August (after the school holidays) so we can all go see it as a group. Tickets are standard Hoyts prices: $11.50 for children 15 and under, $16.50 for adults. This is a fundraising activity for the association so please support it by bringing along your family and friends. Last year we sold out before the show so you will need to be in quick. Please book your seats by emailing Dave Neill at nik.dave@xtra.co.nz You can only be assured a seat if you have booked. Payment is to be made on the day.

All the best to those grading and to those attending the nationals, Sugihara Cup and Commonwealth champs, I am sure you will represent the club admirably

Hi Everyone,

Annual Training Camp - Glentui

This was a great success again with 40 students and senseis taking part, including 5 from Sensei Joe McGregor's dojo in Tauranga (Joe is Sensei Pat's son) and Sensei Lindsey Thomas from Linton army camp. Everyone trained really well and it was great to see all the kids bubbling with enthusiasm after the camp. Thanks again to the Southern Trust who subsidised the weekend.

Loon's Quiz Night in Lyttelton

This was also a great success with all but two tables sold out and $919.50 being raised for the association. It was a lot of fun as you can see from the photos. A very big thanks to those that came on the night, those who gave so generously to the raffle and Jan Paterson for organising the evening.

May 2011

Hi Everyone,

This newsletter is full of good news…

NZ Open Championships, Christchurch.

The club did really well again at the NZ Open last weekend, with most people in our team winning at least one medal. Results for our team should be posted here by the end of the week.

Heating

Our JKF Goju Kai NZ Association has undertaken to have 5 radiant heaters installed in the dojo. These will ensure there is a comfortable temperature for the students and that the spectators won't freeze at the back! We anticipate these will be installed within a fortnight.

Shower

The Association was successful with a grant application for $5,000 to have a shower and hot water unit installed beside the toilet. This was not the full amount and the Association will pay the balance which is approximately $1,500. We are hopeful these too will be installed within a fortnight.

Annual Training Camp - Glentui

The Association has also been successful with a grant application to the Southern Trust subsidise the cost of our annual Training Camp at Glentui on 27th – 29th May. This brings the cost down to $50 per person, including parents. Normally it is $150 for adults and $105 for children under 16 so this should make it affordable to anyone who wants to go. Sensei Pat will be sending out camp details shortly.

National Championships

The Association has also been successful with grant applications to the Southern Trust and the New Zealand Community Trust that will pay for most of the accommodation and airfares for students attending the national championships 16-17 July and the national training camp 18-19 July in Porirua. The Association has agreed to pay the balance so this should help us get a decent sized team to the event. Accommodation has been booked at the Belmont Motor Lodge where the team stayed last year. This is a modern motel, an easy 15 minutes walk from the venue. So that flights can be booked at the rates we have been funded for, we need students and attending parents to confirm who is going, when they would like to go and when they would like to return. Please email Monique Edmond at moniqueedmond@yahoo.com with these details by this Wednesday (if she hasn't already contacted you this week). Remember the training camp is open to everyone who attends the nationals and is run by the national coaches so we highly recommend everyone in our team attends. The Association will make flight and accommodation bookings for the parents so that they may travel and stay with the team and asks that they reimburse the Association as soon as the bookings have been made. We are hoping to secure adult return flights for $158, the accommodation will be approx $75/ night/ per person.

'Loon's Quiz Night in Lyttelton

Don't forget this club fundraising event is on this Saturday (May 14th). It promises to be a hilarious night with Jo Bennett as quiz master. If you haven't booked your table of four yet you had better be quick. Tickets are only $17 per person. Be there by 7.45pm or earlier, the show starts at 8pm. Adults only please. Full Bar and delicious well priced snack food available(Pizza etc). Go to www.theloons.co.nz and book your table now. Then pay at the door on the night.

A reminder too about the grocery raffle – we need every family who trains at the Honbu (464 Tuam st) to contribute one or two quality grocery items (wine is good also). Please bring these items to training this week. If you have any queries please contact Jan Paterson on 03-328-8893.

Sugihara Cup and Commonwealth Karate Championships

These are the two weekends after the national championships. The Sugihara Cup is an international karate meet 23-24 July at North Shore, organised by Fushin Ryu Karate Do. Everyone who has been before raves about it and we will be sending a team. If you are interested in going, please contact Sensei Pat.

The Commonwealth Karate Championships are in Sydney 29-31 July and so far 8 club members have indicated they will be going. The attached information has already been circulated but is attached again if you need it. Some of our club members will be part of the New Zealand team. You do not need to be in the NZ team to complete but must be of a reasonable standard. If you are considering going please contact Pat straight away as registrations need to be in by this Wednesday. Grading/ JKF Goju Kai Association
Grading will be the second last weekend of term as usual. Please note you must be a member of the JKF Goju Kai Association to be able to participate in grading. The Association's job is to help fund equipment, facilities and training opportunities for the club, and it is compulsory for all students of Jitsuei Kai Karate-Do to be a member. Subs were due at the beginning of the term so if you haven't paid already you can pay membership ($20/ student) online to the following account: 031707-0159888-00 (state your family name as the payee and put ASSN FEES as the reference) or pay at the grading (bring cheque or cash).

Funding Applications
Good news! The Association has been successful in securing funding from Pub Charity and Lion Foundation for a brand new set of karate mats for the Redcliffs Dojo. It has also applied for accommodation and airfares for the national championships. The grant cannot be made retrospectively so if you are thinking of attending the nationals please hold off purchasing flights until the outcome of the application is known (should know by the end of April). If you purchase them beforehand the Association will not be able to reimburse you. Any funding received will be shared amongst the team members and coaches who go. The Association has booked out the Belmont Motor Lodge again and this should have enough rooms to accommodate the whole team. Hopefully this will be funded by a grant.

Ashburton Training Weekend with Braedyn Birss.
This was the weekend after the Feb22 earthquake so unfortunately not many people went. Feedback from those who did was very good and so we are hoping Braedyn or another of the national coaches will come down again later in the year.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of you back at training. It will be good for you to get back in a routine and get your mind and body focused again.

Bye for now!

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all OK after the earthquake... the Edmond's lost two goldfish – they died of fright! Gee, that was a while ago now, so was the last newsletter..

Next year we will also include the Otago Southlands (just completed) and the Ashburton Open (if it is held). The club's focus's are 1) participation and 2) achievement and the karate-ka awards are a positive and objective way we can recognise both. Many thanks also to the families who donated the awards: George Sensei, the Reid Family, the Cohen family and the Edmond family. I donated several as well.

Chocolate Fundraiser
Still going - we're down to 29 boxes. Every box sold now is $60 profit directly to the club. We're putting the money into heat pumps for the Tuam st Dojo (remember how cold it was in the winter!) so if you train there please make a real effort to sell some more. Just one more box per student and we'll get them all done – go door knocking, sell them at the kids sports on Saturdays, give them as Christmas presents. Whatever you do, get one more box from me on your way out of the dojo.

Oceania Karate Championships

Tahiti 17th – 19th September, 2010

Sophie Saville Silver Female Kumite +68 Kg
Bronze Female Kumite Open
Gold Female Team Kata
Connor Aldridge Bronze Male Junior Kumite -76 Kg

Awesome!! More international success for club members. With some very good juniors coming up through the ranks we can expect to see more competitors in international competitions in the next couple of years.

Otago/ Southland Championships
Cromwell, Labour weekend

From Dean Sensei: This was a very well organised tournament, run to a strict timetable, and enjoyed by all our students and supporters. A big thank you must go to Pat Quaid, his club, and all those who helped out on the day - I know how much work goes in to these things. It was also excellent to see George Glausiuss, from our club, helping out with the refereeing.

I enjoyed staying at the Top Ten Holiday Park in Cromwell, and next time I might hire a house as the Nicolaie Family were staying in a spacious, two-storied house, with a fantastic view for the same price as the motel unit in the motor camp. All of our students who competed won medals so it was, yet again, another very successful event for our club. Every tournament that you enter is "one in the bank" (as one Sensei famously put it), so it is of most importance to enter as many as possible so that when we compete against the North Islanders at the New Zealand Open and National Championships, we have also had a few tournaments behind us.

A big thanks to Liviu Nicolaie for introducing me to his special cognac (smuggled out of Romania in emptied water bottles), smooth, warm and with the kick of a mule. I'll be back to this tournament next Labour Weekend and I recommend it to all our club members as it was family-friendly and fun. OSU. Sensei Dean

June 2010

On 21-23 May we had our annual Training Camp at Glentui, near Oxford. As usual this was heaps of fun and everyone had a great time. It's an excellent opportunity to do some concerted training and for the kids and parents to get to know each other better outside of the dojo. Next year we will try again to secure funding for the camp, whether we are successful or not I encourage every student to attend as it is a highlight of the year.

Last Monday (Queens Birthday) we had some hardy members run a sausage sizzle at Bunnings, Tower Junction to raise funds for the club. It was a bleak, windy day and they had to stop the wind blowing the sausages around the hotplate! Despite this they managed to raise $287 for the club - a big thank you to Lisa Donelly for organising it and the Donellys, Taylors, Edmonds, Sensei Heather and Amanda Cooper-Davies for manning it. Next year we are booked in for the first weekend in March.

Lisa Donelly has also been busy organising the chocolate fundraising. By now many of you will have received your box of 24 bars from the dojo - we would like to have every student sell at least one box. Every box sold goes into the draw for a collapsible alloy Scooter worth $120. So get selling: Saturday sports games, parents work places, on the street, anywhere! The draw for the scooter will be made at the AGM which is after grading at 464 Tuam st on 27 June. You've got two weeks!

Speaking of the AGM, parents please put this in your diary to attend at 3pm. You will get to hear what the association is doing and what the money they are raising is going towards. We need to vote on a rule change to comply with the IRD's requirements for a tax exemption and we can't do this without the required number of people. You will not be given a job on the committee (unless you'd like one :)) so please be there.

Also coming up are the Canterbury Westlands on 20 June at the Bishopdale YMCA, and the National Championships in Porirua 10,11 July. If you haven't put your entry in yet you had better get cracking! Close off dates are ................We will have strong teams at both events and would like to see as many of our members participating as possible. Especially at the Canterbury Westlands: I encourage all students to give them a go, no matter how long they have been learning. Competitions are a way of bringing out the best in yourself and there is a great sense of satisfaction afterwards that comes from overcoming the nervousness before.

There will be extra training sessions for participants (at no cost) at the Honbu (464 Tuam) this Sunday at 10am and on Sunday 4 July at 10am. The Senseis are volunteering their time to take this so the students can be well prepared, so please make an effort to be there.

All the best to the competitors and happy training everyone!

Regards,
Pat Sensei

26 April 2010

Hi Everyone,

Wow, what a busy month we've had!

First of all the club championships which had a great turn out and a good standard. Congratulations to all those who won medals and especially to all those who were competing for the first time. It can be a bit scary when it's your first competition but you all did really well and I'm proud of you for giving it a go. Click here for the results.

Next we had the term 1 Grading - 86 students graded which I think is a record number for the club. The senior students did their dan grading in front of Senseis Tanaka, Horiuchi (Japan), Sanny Yap, Meng Seah (Singapore) and Pat McGregor. Congratulations to Dave Garlic on gaining his Shodan (black belt) and to everyone else who graded.

Then there was the Opening Ceremony for the Honbu and the Club Dinner at Annies Winebar and Restaurant. These were both well attended. The Senseis from Japan and Singapore all enjoyed their visit. In particular Horiuchi Sensei said the opening ceremony was a very memorable occasion and he has asked me to pass on his thanks to all the members of the club. A big thank you to the committee members who organised the opening and also to Amanda Cooper-Davies for donating the gift packs for the Senseis.

We had a very successful competition at the New Zealand Karate Open, with 28 club members competing and 13 of them winning medals! This shows the standard of the club is very high and our students are among the best in the country. The club's results are on the website. You can also view/buy photos of our members competing and also at the grading training at www.minkspix.co.nz. The cost is only $6.00 for a 6" x 4".

The fund raising for the association is under way with the Easi Order program netting about $250. This would have been much higher if more members and students had got involved. A big thanks to Alex, Lois and Mark Cohen who sold by far the most product. Next time we will reduce the number of products to make it easier for people to distribute. Keep an eye out for the chocolate fundraiser and our fundraising BBQ at Bunnings Tower Junction on 25 June (Queens Birthday weekend). Remember, all the money we raise goes back into equipment and opportunities for the students. The more people get involved, the easier it is and the more opportunities we can provide.

On the subject of fundraising I want to thank one of the parents who made a generous donation to the association. We have a list of equipment, facilities and competitions we are trying to raise money for and this donation will help towards them. If anyone else would like to make a donation please contact the Treasurer, George Glausiuss, at gagman2000@hotmail.com

George has another request: he needs the association's accounts audited by a chartered accountant, does anyone know of someone that might be happy to help with this? The accounts are basic accounts and George doesn't expect they will take long to audit.

Finally, here is the next update of the calendar. We have to fit in a club awards function and some other special training but I will advise you of those nearer the time.

21-23 May Training Camp, Glentui
7 June Fundraising BBQ, Bunnings, Tower Junction
20 June Canterbury Westlands, Christchurch
26 June Grading Training
27 June Grading
10,11 July National Championships, Wellington
12,13 July National Training, Wellington
18 September Grading Training
19 September Grading
11 December Grading Training
12 December Grading

It is so heartening for me to see the students going so well. The club is in good shape and we will continue to grow stronger with the commitment from the students and the support of the association committee and the parents. Thank you to all of you!

Happy training,

Regards,
Pat Sensei

3 March 2010

Hi Everyone, there is lots coming up over the next couple of months:

Fund Raising
By now you all should have received the order forms from me/ your children for Easy Order. If you haven't you can pick them up at the Honbu. Please make a big effort to sell as many pizza's, pies, biscuits, etc as you can to your family, friends, workmates, neighbors and other sports teams. All orders are to be completed by 18 March with the money and order form back to me. Make cheques payable to JFK Goju-Kai NZ Inc and be at the Honbu (464 Tuam st) to collect your goods on 24 March between 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm. Any queries please contact Lisa Donelly on 021-151-3707.

On Saturday 20th March some students will be performing half hour karate demonstrations at 11.00 am and 1.30 pm. at South City Shopping Centre. In between they will be handing out club pamphlets and selling finger lights and glow sticks. We would also like to run a raffle, if you are able to donate anything for a prize (perhaps products or a service from your work) please contact Lisa.

Club Championships
These will be held on Sunday 21st March at the Lyttelton Community Centre. NOT this weekend as earmarked on the website. It is a great opportunity for everyone in the club to have a go in a competition. It is an especially good opportunity for the younger students to get some experience and confidence in competing so I strongly urge everyone to have a go. Entry forms are being sent home with the students this week.

Honbu Opening Celebrations
We are very pleased to confirm both Tanaka and Horiuchi Senseis are coming out from Japan for the opening. They are 7th dan and 8th dan respectively and two of the senior senseis for Goju Kai Karate in Japan. It is indeed an honor that they have accepted our invitation to attend our celebrations. They are bringing several competitors with them for the New Zealand open and we expect a number of senseis to be joining us from Singapore as well. We should feel very proud our club is held in such high esteem. The program for their visit is as follows:

Thursday 8th April 1.30pm – 3.00 pm Junior training with Tanaka and Horiuchi Sensei
3.30pm – 5.30pm Adult and advanced junior training
6pm Official Opening of Dojo with drinks and food
Friday 9th April 9am – 1pm Kata seminar. Adults and junior brown belt and above
2pm – 5pm Dan testing
Sat/ Sun 10/11 April NZ Open Championships
Monday 12th April Club dinner at Annies Wine Bar 7pm
Mon/ Tues 12/13 April National training camp, Christ's College

More details of these events will be sent out nearer the time.

A Reminder About the Association Membership Fees
The JKF Goju Kai Karate-Do NZ Association's goal is to provide facilities and equipment for the club and enable students to travel to competitions and training events. It is important for the club that the association is well supported so I am making it compulsory for all my students to belong to the association. Membership for students is only $20 p.a. Parents are encouraged to join as well ($25 p.a) as this helps the association financially and gives them voting rights at general meetings. If you haven't joined yet forms are available at the Honbu. Membership and fees must be paid by 31 March. After that I'll tell the senseis where you live!

27 January 2010

Happy New Year! I trust you all had a good break over the holidays and are looking forward to getting back into your karate.

Classes for adults have already started and there was intensive training for some children last week. Regular classes for children recommence on Monday 1 February.

Well done to all those who participated in the grading at the end of last year, you can see the results on the website at www.karatechristchurch.co.nz A special congratulations to Corky Hohepa who achieved Shodan and Sempai Heather Cooper who gained NiDan. This is just reward for all their hard work and training.

While you are on the website check out the gallery – there are now many photos from the very early days right up to the last grading. If you have photos you would like to contribute please send them to neil@neiledmond.co.nz You might also want to check out the instructors section to find out more about them.

In December a group of the club's instructors and parents formed an association with a view to promoting the teaching and practice of Goju Kai style of karate in New Zealand. Called the JKF Goju Kai Karate-Do NZ Association, it's main role will be to apply for grants and conduct fund raising to provide facilities and equipment for the club and enable students to travel to competitions and training events.

It will be compulsory for all my students to belong to the association as it is the students that will derive all the benefits of the association's activities. Membership for students is only $20 p.a. Parents are encouraged to join as well ($25 p.a) as this helps the association financially and gives them voting rights at general meetings. You will be given membership forms along with the invoice for your term fees next week.

The Association is currently being managed by the following people:
Chairman Neil Edmond
Secretary Monique Edmond
Treasurer George Glausiuss
Committee Heather Cooper
Lisa Cole
Jan Patterson

Feel free to contact any of them if you have any questions. Formal elections will be held in July but if you would like to help out on the committee before then, please contact Neil or Monique Edmond at 355 2328.

This will be an exciting year, with the formal opening of the new Honbu in April, the visit of Sensei Horiuchi from Japan and a number of very promising youngsters coming up through our ranks.

I look forward to seeing you all at training!

Pat Sensei

26 October 2009

The big day is here! The new headquarters of the club at 464 Tuam St are finished and tomorrow we will hold the first classes!

From now on all training that used to be at the Y.M.C.A and all grading weekends will be held at the new Honbu (H.Q.) THERE ARE NO MORE CLASSES AT THE YMCA.

With the move there are some small changes to the timetable for the Honbu classes (Lyttelton, Redcliffs, Medbury and Cathedral Grammer stay the same). Thursday's junior advanced class is now 5.30 – 6.30pm, the adult kata class is now 6.30 – 8.00pm.

A big thank you to all those who helped put down the floor and transfer the equipment and mirrors from the YMCA to the new dojo. It is gratifying and humbling to me that so many people offered to help. It is a sign of a strong club that many people want to be involved.

Another big job we did was water blast all the mats. This took 6 hours! Please ensure you wear shoes on your way to training so we don't have dirty feet on the mats.

How do you like the new website? If you have any photos you think people would like to see in the Gallery, please send them to neil@neiledmond.co.nz

With the new space there is room for more students so if you know of someone you think would enjoy karate, point them towards the website or get them to get in touch with Pat Sensei gojupaddy@xtra.co.nz Men, women, boys, girls – karate is for everybody!

12 October 2009

It is the start of a new term and I have some exciting news for you… in 2 weeks time we will be moving the headquarters of the club to our new premises at 464 Tuam St (East of Fitzgerald Ave next to Sheppard and Kime). The reason for the move is because of new developments at the YMCA which do not suit us. The new dojo is being purpose built with a larger training area, waiting room, office, toilet and changing rooms ALL ON THE GROUND FLOOR.

There is much labour to be done in the interim. At this time the area looks like a bomb site but we are making good progress. We will have a working bee on the weekend of 17th and 18th of October which will include putting down the new floor, installing mirrors and of course moving our gear out of the YMCA. If you can help please contact Pat on 3288333 or 0272418011 or email gojupaddy@xtra.co.nz. Old proverb many hands make light work.

There will be an official opening in the New Year and we are looking at having my teacher Horiuchi Sensei and hopefully Tanaka and Maekawa Sensei all out from Japan for this occasion. We will look at having training sessions with these fantastic people and possibly a club tournament. There is much planning to be done. It is very very exciting!

Classes resume this Monday 12th October, for the first two weeks the timetable is the same as last term. From Tuesday 27th October all training that used to be at the Y.M.C.A and all grading weekends will be held at the new Honbu (H.Q.) Dojo. There will be some small changes to the timetable which I will let you know about.

Dates for this term are:
12 October Term Starts
17/18 October Working Bee
25 October Otago Southland Champs Cromwell
26 October Labour day (no training)
27 October First training at new Honbu 464 Tuam St
7 November Ashburton Open
12/13 December Final grading weekend for the year

I encourage all students to participate in the competitions – it is through competition you test yourself and grow as a karateka (karate student).

Well done to those who participated in the intensive training last week. Miki Sensei who took the Japanese language and games sure was a hit. We have a new website coming and will put some photos on there for you to see.
